Rolling with the punches when it comes to change in your business.
I saw this quote for the first time today and it made me smile and feel a little shocked by it too. After a sharp intake of breath, it made me think that Mike Tyson may have a very good point here and that this quote applies to life and to businesses too.
As business owners all of us will claim to be fine as we watch each week roll into the next. Businesses trot along in a groove and it’s all great. That is until you get a metaphorical business punch in the face – a seismic change happens within your business, within your customer base or within your industry and you are forced to stand stock-still, to figure out what the hell just happened.
I think that a metaphorical business punch in the face is a good thing.
It shocks you into taking stock of what is going on in your business. It forces you to look at your clients, it challenges you to change things that jolly well need to be changed. You have choices, you can embrace that punch, roll with the it and learn all the new things that come hand in hand with change, or you can crumple in the face of it all. I know which one I’d choose.
I don’t believe many people have ever said Mike Tyson was a clever man, but I’d happily argue that he may just have had a tiny, little point with this one. If you need proof you’ll find this quote hanging in my office.
